Hayes Hall Lobby

This redesign was used in participation with Muuto as a competitive charette for the design of the lobby of Hayes Hall.

Design is nothing without collaboration and open minds. The building design students occupy for most of their time at Ohio State should be reflective of their disciplines, while catering to their needs. Occupants are welcomed with a wayfinding and informational pillar so the halls are easy to navigate, and the uses of the building are clear. Student work is on display, building pride and sharing student’s creations with the world. Behind, a comfortable and open space provides students, faculty, and staff to choose between more public or private seating, or between lounge chairs to relax between classes or spreading out to work on a desk. The lobby is expressive, to represent the creativity that is constantly flowing through the design building, while inspiring inclusivity through dynamic seating options. Hayes Hall is the oldest building on campus, and preserving the history through the iconic arches is a must. While the walls are coated with a fresh layer of paint, the arches remain exposed to stand proud and show its years through the aged brick. To one side is a mural reminiscent of a timeless campus, with the back glass wall of the lobby will be glazed with buckeye leaves, representing Ohio State as a whole as well as employing biophilia on a wall with no outdoor views. For acoustic control, the most social area is anchored by a rug to soften the voices of designers working together toward a new idea. Designers are known for their long hours and late nights, and by creating a space in which they can enjoy the little spare time that they have, it increases their longevity by providing them respite and a place to recharge. With this new lobby, all occupants will feel at ease and know they are part of the design community.
